FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is west coast swing?
Do I need a partner?
West Coast Swing traces its roots back to Lindy, finding its rhythm along the shores of the American West Coast, particularly in California, during the 1940s. While it maintains a nod to its origins, this dance is far from stagnant; it's a living, breathing entity that keeps evolving even today.
No! West Coast Swing is a social dance and we encourage this by rotating within the class so that everyone dances with everyone.
While bringing a partner along can be lots of fun, many people come alone, it’s a great way to also make new friends.
West coast swing is also de-gendered, which means lots of people don’t necessarily dance the “traditional” male = leader, female = follow roles, and many dance both.
I am a total beginner, can I come?
Do I need to book?
YES! We have a rolling beginner class that runs every Wednesday night from 8pm. It is designed so that you can start any week and you don’t need to know what was taught the week prior.
Lots of people do this class for about 12 weeks, just to feel super confident before they move up to the next level.
No! But it can make life easier if you have booked something online, paid for it then all you need to worry about is turning up. It also gives you that extra motivation to head out to a class when you have perhaps got comfy on the sofa… you will never regret going!
What should I wear?
What sort of shoes do I need?
West Coast Swing is a very casual relaxed dance, and that’s also our style. Wear what you feel comfortable in, jeans for example are perfectly fine.
It can get hot, so layers are always a good idea. If you are going to your first social dance and you know you sweat a lot, a change of t-shirt (or two) will be greatly appreciated.
Ladies, it’s best to avoid heels. A low heel is fine, but you will probably have more stability in a comfy pair of trainers that don’t have much grip.
A pair a suede soled dance shoes are perfect, but wait until you are hooked to invest, it won’t take long!
Guys, avoid heavy soled boots like Caterpillar boots, or anything with a sole that doesn’t really give much connection to the floor. Again, a pair of trainers or shoes that have a slim sole and not too much grip are best.
